What attracts rats?

The most obvious reason for a Rat to enter your home is to look for a food source, and Rats will eat practically anything! Factors like owning pets or livestock will increase the risk of a Rat infestation, so be mindful of any food scraps that are left around the immediate borders of your property.

The basic instincts a Rat has is safety and reproduction, so their drive to build nests is always there. Any warm and sheltered area will serve as a nest, including piles of wood and stones. Rats also have a preference for damp and moist environments, so they are not deterred by water.

Will rats just go away?

During the winter months the Rats will be looking for warm and sheltered spaces to hide, but this does not mean that come spring time they will decide to leave! Rats are a human health hazard that spread dangerous diseases so getting rid of them at the first early signs should be your main priority.

If you live in Nottingham or the surrounding areas then please get in touch with Ace Pest Control. All of our technicians that service Nottingham are equipped and experienced to tackle a Rat infestation, allowing you to enjoy your home and garden once again!

Signs you have unwanted rats

  1. RAT DROPPINGS: This will probably be the first sign of an infestation, and the droppings will be found around their food source. Droppings are small and can be hard to spot, which is dangerous as this is how they spread diseases, along with their urine.
  2. CHEWED UP BELONGINGS: Rats are very destructive, especially when sourcing materials to build a nest. They will seek newspaper and cardboard, or anything that will shred apart easily. To keep their teeth shortened they will gnaw on walls and boards which is the type of destruction you want to stop straight away!
  3. RUB MARKS AND GNAW MARKS: Grease and dirt from their fur will leave marks in your home, most noticeable along skirting boards. Rats will gnaw on anything wooden, wires, and cables.
  4. RAT NESTS: If you find a nest then you can be sure the Rat in your house is breeding and trying to grow it’s family, prolonging the infestation and any damage they are causing. Check in dark areas in quieter rooms that don’t have much disturbance from humans.
